Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, my fellow intern Cody Winton, and I head over to the Serven home for our weekly Theological
Roundtables. At these meetings, Pastor Serven leads us in our
theological studies and has us present our homework assignments.
Today,
we were learning about the Covenant of Grace. Here is what the
whiteboard looked like after we were finished. As you can see, Pastor
Serven kinda ran out of room :)
I don't blame him though. I
didn't realize just how vast and deep a topic the Covenant of Grace was
until I started reading Dabney's Systematic Theology and Louis Berkhof's
Manual of Christian Doctrine. My head started to swim as I wrangled with a host of new terms and ideas. As an example, Berkhof introduced the distinction of the legal agreement by faith in the covenant of grace, and the communion of life in the covenant of grace. We also went over the promises of the covenant, the requirements of the covenant, the characteristics of the covenant, and the members of the covenant. After all that, we had still only scratched the surface!
But at the end of the day, it is most important to keep this fact in the forefront of my mind...
"The
covenant of grace is a covenant of friendship with man which represents
the way in which the blessings of redemption are mediated to the
sinner" -Louis Berkhof
Praise God for the gracious and marvelous covenant and His eternal faithfulness to it!
"Know
therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who
keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation
with those who love Him and keep His commandments." -Deuteronomy 7:9
And so, with renewed vigor, determination, and optimism, I'm eagerly looking forward to the future Theological Rountables of 2013!
